Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island Turns to Providea Conferencing for Video-Over-IP Network Upgrade

February 24, 2004 09:06 AM US Eastern Timezone

QUINCY, Mass.-(BUSINESS WIRE)—Feb. 24, 2004—Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island, one of the nation's leading specialty hospitals for women and newborns, has completed an upgrade of its video conferencing network that connects nine affiliated healthcare facilities throughout Rhode Island. With the help of Providea Conferencing, a provider of video, audio and web conferencing solutions, the hospital has upgraded from ISDN to video-over-IP technology (VoIP) and installed a conferencing room which is now available to the public for meetings and events.

Providea has provided Women & Infants Hospital advice and counsel on the
design of the VoIP network and the selection of the right products for
their specific application. They will also provide ongoing service and
support for Women & Infants Hospital and its affiliated facilities.

VoIP networks offer the best combination of pricing, superior quality
and reliability. Another key benefit of IP video conferencing is that you
can use the existing data network as the means of transport. This is
known as "converged networking" and can lead to dramatic cost savings
and efficiency improvements because only one network is deployed and
managed.

"We are big believers in the value of video conferencing as a teaching
tool," said Dr. Skip Granai, Division Director of Women's Oncology at
Women & Infants. "This upgrade of our conferencing capabilities is
consistent with our commitment to delivering quality healthcare. We are
investing in the tools that will help us remain one of the leading
teaching hospitals in the country for OB/GYN and newborn pediatrics."

"Women & Infants Hospital has taken a leadership position in applying
cutting edge video conferencing technologies in a healthcare setting to
the benefit of their patients, doctors and medical school students,"
said Providea Conferencing president Todd Luttinger.

The primary teaching affiliate of Brown Medical School for obstetrics,
gynecology and newborn pediatrics, Women & Infants has been utilizing
video conferencing technology for nearly a decade. video conferencing is
used in a variety of applications including:

— Training: Doctors and students have access to medical experts in a
variety of specialty areas as well as geographic locations including
Israel, Slovakia and Argentina. Tumor boards are broadcast to affiliated
facilities and doctors from around the region.

— Education: Fully equipped operation rooms make telesurgery a central
part of the learning experience for medical school students.

— Professional development: Training and certification programs take
place utilizing video conferencing capabilities.

Conferencing Room Available For Local Businesses
In addition to the network upgrade, Women & Infants Hospital has also
completed a state-of-the-art conferencing room which is available for
public use. The room is equipped with the latest equipment from Tandberg
